What causes the message "Tagging is not supported."? I'm getting it
when I try and tag messages in one particular directory. I can't see
anything wrong with permissions or anything and the messages open OK
in mutt.

Since you apparently write "directory" as a synonym for "folder", I'm
going to assume you use Maildirs.

Is that particular Maildir on a different mount / filesystem? AFAIK
tagging an item in a Maildir involves changing the filename. That could
fail for example if the filesystem had a limit on filename length, or
prohibited certain characters in filenames.

Or, you could be out of inodes on the mount. That has been one
complaint about Maildirs, though it never happened to me - I don't get
enough mail!

No, it's a mbox file containing a few (i.e. four or five) E-Mails.

None of the mbox files in this particular directory can have their
messages tagged.

(To my mind 'Folder' is an MS euphemism for a directory!)

So, thanks for trying, but I don't think your thoughts are the answer.

I do have write permission (and anyway how could I have written the
messages there if I hadn't) and it's not a mount or a symbolic link or
anything, it's just a directory in my /home/chris hierarchy.

look at the last few lines of the header and/or display them here (not
more than 10 lines).

Is it that "Status: RO"? If so what/who put it there?

despite looking like it means "read only", that's a combination of
the "Read" (you've read the message) and "Old" flags.

What causes the message "Tagging is not supported."?
Looking at the source, it appears that it is triggered if you do an
OP_TAG and either you're not in the tag menu or there's a
(transient?) dialog:

case OP_TAG:
if (menu->tag && !menu->dialog)
... // do tagging stuff
else
mutt_error(_("Tagging is not supported."));

It's the only place this error appears in the source I have here.
